Owakudani (大涌谷) is a volcanic valley with active sulfur vents and hot springs which is located in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan. This is a beautiful and popular tourist site where Kuro-tamago (黒卵 literally means “black egg”) — a local specialty of eggs hard-boiled in the hot springs. The boiled eggs which turn black and smell sulfuric is said to be able to increase longevity. It is said that consuming 1 egg will increase 7 years of your life.
It is said that Owakudani (大涌谷) area around a crater created during the last eruption of Mount Hakone some 3,000 years ago. The area has an active volcanic zone where sulfurous fumes, hot springs and hot rivers can be experienced.
On a good day with clear sky, it is said that Owakudani (大涌谷) has a good view of Mt Fuji.
Only suitable for those with no health issues, one can take a short walk which takes about 10 minutes per way leading from the ropeway station to enter into the volcanic zone where a number of steam vents and bubbling pools. Here, on lucky day, one can see how the Kuro-tamago (黒卵) is cooked in the natural hot water.
