The war memorial of Ryōzen Kannon (霊山観音)

While walking down the Higashiyama District, we discover Ryōzen Kannon (霊山観音), a war memorial commemorating the war dead of the Pacific War which is located in the Eastern of Kyoto.

Here, the concrete and steel statue of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Kannon) was built by Hirosuke Ishikawa. The statue is 24 m (80 ft) high and weighs approximately 500 tons.

The shrine beneath the statue contains an image of Bodhisattva Ekādaśamukha and images of the god of wind and god of thunder. There are memorial tablets of the 2 million Japanese who died in World War II. Services in their memory are conducted four times a day. Ryōzen Kannon (霊山観音) is also a memorial hall in honour of the unknown soldier killed in World War II.
