Dotonbori (道頓堀) is one of the most popular tourist spot in Osaka, just next to the Dotonbori canal. Filled with lots of abundant options of restaurants and bars, it’s also a great location for shopping. A beautiful place with beautiful sight.
Night view of the Dotonbori Canal
One of the famous icon to see here is the Glico Man, a sign depicting a giant athlete on a blue track is a symbol of Glico candy. The sign has been changed on several occasions to celebrate events such as the World Cup and to show support for the Osaka baseball team, the Hanshin Tigers. The current version is the sixth version, which uses LEDs while the previous five incarnations of the sign used neon lights.
One of the popular restaurant to try here, not recommendable for those allergic to seafood or crab, is the famous Kani Dōraku crab restaurant, where a six and a half meter crab can be seen on the front top of the crab restaurant Kani Doraku. It is mechanised, where its arms and eyestalks are moveable. Built in 1960, this mechanical billboard soon spawned imitations, including a squid that puffs steam and oni (demons) that light up at night.
Other interesting sight in Dotonbori
Our hotel, Hotel Metro 21 is located just within walking distance from Dotonbori, hence guess this is where we will be hanging out most for the rest of our stay here in Osaka.
