Claypot Curry Fish Head

Fish head curry is a very popular dish here in Malaysia especially in Indian Restaurant. It is said to be a dish with Indian and Chinese origins and is served with either rice or bread.

My little picky eater is a curry lovers. So when we were out shopping earlier today, we saw some very fresh fish head, hence he requested for me to try cooking curry fish head for dinner. A quick google online, I found the recipe from Rasa Malaysia – Curry Fish Head Recipe and managed to get all the ingredients listed. I adapted it slightly to suit the taste for my family. My adapted recipe as below :

Ingredients:

  • 650gm Fish Head (you can use Garoupa, Salmon or Red Snapper) – in my case, I use Salmon Head 
  • 2 tablespoons tamarind pulp + 1 cup water
  • 3 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cups of water
  • 6 nos of tomatoes, cut into quarters and remove the seeds
  • 2 big pieces of fried beancurd, cut into small pieces (in my case, I cut it into 6 for each piece)
  • 6 nos of Ladies Fingers, cut into 3 pieces
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar to taste
  • 2 stalks lemongrass, cut into small pieces
  • 1 small turmeric, skin peeled and sliced into small pieces
  • 20gm red chilli paste
  • 50gm peeled shallots and cut into halves
  • 5g belacan (shrimp paste)
  • 1.5 tablespoons fish curry powder
  • 6 pieces of curry leaves 

Method:

  1. In the blender, prepare the spice by adding the lemongrass, turmeric, red chilli paste, shallots, belacan and curry powder. Mix together into a paste
  2. In a bowl, mix the tamarind pulp and water using your fingers to extract the juice. Discard the seeds
  3. Using a medium size claypot, heat up the oil. Saute the curry leaves and paste together until fragrant
  4. Add the tamarind juice and then the water
  5. Bring to boil and then add the fish head. Lower the fire and cook for 5 minutes
  6. Add in the Ladies Fingers, Tomatoes and fried beancurd. Cover and cook for another 10 minutes 
  7. Season accordingly with salt and sugar to taste
  8. Serve hot with rice or bread
