Busan Travel : Dongbaekseom Island (동백공원) Exploration

After the hot morning exploration around Haeundae Beach (해운대해수욕장), we headed to the end of beach, where our exploration of  Dongbaekseom Island (동백공원) begins.

What used to be an island, Dongbaekseom Island (동백섬) is now part of the mainland. It is a small island with many dongbaek trees and evergreens thrive there.  Dongbaekseom Island (동백섬) has been declared by the Busan Tourism Organization as the Island Tourist Site No. 46.

We head up Dongbaekseom Island (동백섬) from the Westin Chosun direction, end of the Haeundae Beach (해운대해수욕장). It was a long walk and tiring walk up heading towards Dongbaekseom Island (동백섬) under the hot sun.

Along the way, we saw a 2.5 m high statue of a mermaid sitting on the rock. The mermaid represents the legend of the Dongbaekseom Island (동백공원) , the lesser heart breaking love story of the princess of Topaz who married the King of Mungungnara. She originated from Naranda who longed for her homeland, so shedding many tears that reflected on the topaz bead given by her grandmother-in-law.  A monument for the song “Come back to Busan Port” (sung by Jo Yong-pil) stands at the flower garden of the shore protection roadside of Haeundae Beach.

Reaching the top of Dongbaekseom Island (동백섬), is a monument of the scholar Choi Chi-won. The legend says that Choi Chi-won was on his way to Gaya-san and was fascinated with the beauty of Dongbaekseom Island (동백섬). He created a base and carved ‘Haeundae’, where the origin of ‘Haeundae’ comes about.

Dongbaekseom Island (동백섬) also offers fantastic views of the Busan shoreline towards Mipo, Dalmaji Hill, Busan Gwangandaegyo Bridge (부산 광안대교) and Oryukdo Island (부산 오륙도), designated as National Cultural Heritage Scenic Spots No.24.

A truly enjoyable adventure, Dongbaekseom Island (동백섬) is definitely worth the visit if you are around Haeundae Beach (해운대해수욕장) area
