Our Day 3 adventure started with another hot morning exploration of what is called the ‘Santorini of the East’, Busan Gamcheon Culture Village (부산 감천문화마을). The village is formed by houses built in staircase-fashion like on the foothills of the coastal mountain. Another nickname of Busan Gamcheon Culture Village (부산 감천문화마을), is ‘Machu Picchu of Busan’. There are many vibrantly decorated murals and sculptured created by the residents throughout the entire village.
A little history on Busan Gamcheon Culture Village (부산 감천문화마을). This used to be Busan’s slum area where refugees fled their homes for Busan during the Korean War. This area was a poor area until 2009 when the Ministry of Tourism launch the creative community project. The streets of Busan Gamcheon Culture Village (부산 감천문화마을) then were painted with mural and gravity while some of the houses were transformed into studios and galleries. Busan Gamcheon Culture Village (부산 감천문화마을) became popular when it appeared in the popular Korean variety shows like Running Man and The Superman Returned.
To get to Busan Gamcheon Culture Village (부산 감천문화마을), we took the subway to Toseong Station on Busan Subway Line 1. Exiting from Exit 6, we took a walk of about 5 to 8 minutes on the right towards the Hospital where we waited for the local bus Seogu 2 to get to Gamcheon Elementary School Bus Stop.
The bus stop was crowded with people. After a failed attempt to get into the bus, we decided to take cab to our destination instead. The right choice indeed! As long as you have minimum 3 person, taking the cab in Busan would be cheaper (depending on the distance of the journey). The cost of the cab ride to Gamcheon Elementary School Bus Stop only cost us KRW2,800 vs if we were to take the bus costing us KRW1,300 per person.
Our exploration of Busan Gamcheon Culture Village (부산 감천문화마을) now officially starts! There is no entrance fee, however the map of the village is available at KRW2,000. If you intend to get the map, ensure that you participate in the stamp scavenger hunt and redeem your free souvenir from any of the shop in the village.
Note of caution: Because this is a live cultural village where it is still inhabited by residents, please keep your noise level down as you are exploring.
