We finally completed our Busan (부산) Travel. Day 5 started with a relaxing morning, having breakfast in the Hotel. We head over to Busan Domestic Airport for our afternoon flight to Jeju-do (제주도), the next part of our Travel South Korea Summer Holiday via Jeju Air.
Jeju-do (제주도) is one of the largest island in Korea. It had been the South Korean’s favorite domestic holiday destination especially Honeymooners for its beautiful beaches, lush countrysides and many interesting places to visit.
Our journey from the airport to our accommodation which is located in Seogwipo takes about 1 hour. Indeed a very long journey. That is how big Jeju-do (제주도). On the way to the accommodation, we stop by Seogwipo Rural Five-Day Market (서귀포시 향토 오일장) to grab some necessities for our long stay here on Jeju-do (제주도).
What is the best way to experience the folk culture and find inexpensive Jeju fresh products? Jeju-do (제주도) Traditional markets are the excellent places!
Commonly known as ‘The Five Day Market’, as the name suggest, the market is only open every 5 days. These market opens from early morning till about 7 pm on the designated day that it is open. The market offers fresh vegetables, fruits, seafood, medicinal herbs as well as any daily necessities i.e clothing and basic household stuffs. There are a total of 5 different locations for ‘The Five Day Market’ where the same traders will move their stalls around. These markets are located near popular tourist sites, giving tourist comprehensive cultural experience.
The oldest and biggest ‘Five Day Market’ is Jeju City Folk Five-Day Market (제주시 민속 오일장). Because Seogwipo Rural Five-Day Market (서귀포시 향토 오일장) was located only 3 minutes drive from where we were staying, we considered ourselves lucky to be able to explore at least one of the ‘The Five Day Market’ on Day 1 of Mystical Jeju Summer Holiday.
What not to be missed for us? Since we had such an early lunch due to our flight schedule, we grab the popular Korean Street Snack, Hotteok (호떡), filled pancake made from wheat flour, water, milk, sugar, and yeast. The dough is rised for several hours. These handful-sized balls are filled with a sweet mixture, which may contain brown sugar, honey, chopped peanuts, and cinnamon. The filled dough is then placed on a greased griddle, and pressed flat into a large circle with a special tool with a stainless steel circle and wooden handle as it cooks. Such a perfect way to end our exploration of Seogwipo Rural Five-Day Market (서귀포시 향토 오일장).
We checked into our accommodation for week long stay here in Jeju-do (제주도). Our first experience booking via Airbnb. The apartment we had chosen is definitely a great choice as it is located smack in the middle of Seogwipo. Walking distance to almost everything, restaurants, shopping area, convenience stores and the beach!
Day 5 aka Day 1 in Jeju-do (제주도) ended with a wonderful Bossam (보쌈), boiled pork eaten with wrap salted napa cabbage / lettuce and/or perilla leaves dinner recommended by our host. Excellent recommendation! Dinner was wonderful and reasonably priced. And the restaurant is only located about 10 minutes walk from where we are staying.
