Mystical Jeju : Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff (대포동지삿개)

A morning of outdoor adventure, from Oedolgae Rock (외돌개), our next stop is Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff (대포동지삿개).

Natural Monument No. 443 (Designated on January 6, 2005), Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff (대포동지삿개) is another one of the beautiful spot in Jeju-do (제주도) that was not part of our itinerary but a recommendation by our friendly guide cum host in Jeju-do (제주도).

Alternatively known as Columnar Joint Along Jungmun and Daepo Coasts, Jeju, Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff (대포동지삿개) is a cliff at the end of a pine tree forest along the farm road southwest from Daepo-dong.

A jeolri (joint) is a split side of a rock and in volcanic rocks, jusangjeolri (columnar joints) and pansangjeolri (platy joints) are developed. Jusangjeolri (columnar joints) refers to the column-shaped joint that are develop in the basaltic rocks in a lava flow. The cracks are formed from the contractions due to the rapid cooling of lava.

Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff (대포동지삿개)was formed when the lave from Hallasan Mountain erupted into the sea of Jungmun. These rock pillars are shaped like cubes or hexagons in many sizes, making it seems like God had build them. The 20m cliff is a popular spot for high tide and sea angling.

From the entrance of Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff (대포동지삿개), we could see the hard work of the Province Government puts-in to beautify this place. A short walk down the platform, one will be able to see the waves of the high tide crashing into the side of the cliff, providing a breathtaking view of the ocean surrounding the pillars. Compliment with a beautiful blue sky, the view are simply awesome!

Walking along the path of the entire area, there are many different view of Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff (대포동지삿개) from different angle.

There is also a huge rock in the garden surrounded by the twelve animal zodiac of the Chinese Calendar.

As our friendly Mr. Kang said when he was driving us to this area, the view at Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff (대포동지삿개) would be so amazing, Yongduam Rock – Dragon Head Rock (용두암) is nothing in comparison. And I totally agree to that statement. The view at Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff (대포동지삿개) is definitely way better.
