South Korea Travel : Namiseom Island (남이섬)

Spring is here! I finally managed to re-visit one of my favourite Asian Country, South Korea to experience Spring Love!

I could still remember my 1st visit to South Korea 17 years ago, it was the start of the k-drama hype where Namiseon Island (남이섬) was made popular by the popular korean drama, Winter Sonata (겨울연가). So, naturally, part of the tour package that we took covers Namiseon Island (남이섬). However, due to the limited time that was allocated, we only had 1 hour to explore the Island leaving me dissatisfied. And ever since then, I had always wanted to return for another visit.

I finally made it back and managed to experience Spring on now, very developed Namiseon Island (남이섬).

Our journey to Namiseon Island (남이섬) starts in the morning where we took ITX train that cost us only KRW4,300 per person from Cheongyangni Subway Station to Gapyeong Station. Upon arrival in Gapyeong Station, we took the Shuttle Bus with a day pass that cost only KRW6,000 per person. This pass allowed us unlimited rides within the day.

The bus comes at intervals of 30 minutes to an hour. And they are usually packed from 10AM – 2PM, so take note and plan your timing well with recommendation to get to the bus stop earlier than the scheduled timing. Missing the timing, you will need to wait for another hour for the next bus which may result in missing an attraction or 2.

The timing of the bus and the route are as below:Course-A-Gapyeong-bus-Nami-IslandGapyeong-Tourist-Bus-Schedule-Nami-Island-1

Our first stop of the day is Namiseon Island (남이섬). We arrived at Gapyeong Station at around 940 am and managed to take the 1010 hrs bus bringing us to Namiseom Ferry Dock.

We took the 5 minute ferry across to Namiseon Island (남이섬). There is an alternative, the Namiseom Zip Wire (남이섬 짚와이어), said to be one of the largest zipline facilities in Asia where one could zip from an 80 meter-high tower along a wire cable to Namiseon Island (남이섬), 940 meters away. The fare for this ride as of March 2018 is KRW38,000 which includes admission to Namiseon Island (남이섬) and return ferry. Zipline

Located just 3.8 km from Gapyeong County, Namiseon Island (남이섬) actually belongs to Chuncheon in Gangwon-do. Namiseon Island (남이섬) is 430,000 square meters in area and approximately 4 km in diameter.

The excitement upon arrival on the island…. Cannot imagine that after 17 years, I finally made it back here on Namiseon Island (남이섬).

We started our exploration of Namiseon Island (남이섬)… Much to my surprised, the Island today has developed and is now home to home to several galleries and is the site of the Song Museum, which also houses a collection of international ethnic musical instruments (liuseum).

All around the Island, there were indoor and outdoor stages with facilities for seminars and workshop. There is now Naminara National Hotel and 10 cottages for those interested in staying the night. Guess, my next trip, I should consider that.

Namiseon Island (남이섬) is an oasis for culture and leisure in a peaceful harmony nature. Despite all the development on the island, I must say that I am impressed how the beautiful nature of the island is very well kept.

We enjoyed ourselves walking (there are options of renting the bicycle or electronic bicycle) on foot exploring the island. While it is my travel partner’s first visit to  Namiseon Island (남이섬), I was reminiscing the feeling when I first visited Namiseon Island (남이섬) and its beauty that brought me back again!

Rental Facilities (Bike)

One-person: 4,000 won (30 min) / 7,000 won (1 hr)
Tandem: 8,000 won (30 min) / 14,000 won (1 hr)
Quadruplet: 15,000 won (30 min)
Electronic bicycle: 10,000 won (30 min) / 18,000 won (1 hr)

Today, Namiseon Island (남이섬) is dedicated to improvement of mental and physical well being of children throughout the world. The sign of its main sponsor of Hans Christian Andersen Award and UNICEF regular contributions are visible all around the island. It is interesting to see that there were sitting areas where each seat contain a small book shelf filled with children books.

In comparison with how it was 17 years ago, now on Namiseon Island (남이섬), restaurant and shops are available all around. However, the visible sign of the popular filming locations of Winter Sonata (겨울연가) are still around. The Metasequoia path, the main filming locations still attracts a lot of visitors.

And one is able to strike a pose with adjumma (aunty killer) Bae Yong-joon (배용준)’s life-size copper statue. There were many other memories and photos from the popular Korean Drama that started the K-Drama wave worldwide. Looking at the photos gallery, brings back fond memories from the drama (yes, I was one of those whom had watched and truly enjoyed the drama) and how triggers the memories of the late Park Yong Ha (박용하), one of the earlier K-Pop star that I was once crazy over… hehehe…

Time flies when one is having so much fun exploring. We grab a quick korean lunch in Korean restaurant (Nammoon).

We ended our exploration of Namiseon Island (남이섬) after lunch to head off to the bus stop to wait for the bus heading to our next stop, The Garden of Morning Calm (아침고요수목원)

  1. I have friends from London visiting Seoul and I was at all three places two times last week (the girls wanted to see the drama locations and the guys wanted to go a day later to enjoy the sights). It would have been lovely to see you.
